Twitter can be a good way to communicate your message to the masses, but also, if not used correctly, can backfire, or at the least, be ineffective. So this is a brief tip to give you some starter tips to make the most of your tweets. 1. Don’t start your tweets with ‘@‘ sign. You can still use @ within you tweet as long as you start your tweet with a word or a full stop ‘ . ‘ or any other character. 2. Videos and articles are a good way to get engagement with your audience or users. It gives a break from just words. Sometimes you might want to share a link with the message you want to communicate. This could eat into your character allowance as you only have 280. Add a Shortened URL for a link you want to share by using websites that will shrink the address to just a few characters; use a site like Bitly or Buffer to shorten URLs and add them to your tweets. This will allow you to enjoy a traffic boost without sacrificing much room in your tweet in the process. 3. Don’t use too many hashtags at once. Limit hashtags to no more than 3 at a time. 4. Don’t tweet every minute. Leave time gaps between your tweets. Your audience might get sick of the tweeter spam or messages might get missed. Space out your tweets and don’t post too many in one sitting. If you have designated time to post tweets, you can use some of that time to research your material. You can also use tip number 5. 5. You can put a time-release on your tweets. You can use sites like ’TweetDeck’ from Twitter , ‘ Hootsuite ‘ and ‘Buffer’ . These apps provide you with a scheduled time to release your tweets. There is a guide within Twitter for how to use TweetDeck. 6. You can tweet as many times as you like. You can repeat your tweets as many times as you want, as they reach different audiences each time. You can also change the hashtags around. 7. Use images. Turn quotes in to pictures to save character space. It also helps engage people faster. You can use simple apps like ‘Canva’ To create posters and shareabe pictures with your message. You can use the templates provided and modify them to put your own preference on them. 8. Incorporate viral words. These can be common words like ‘The’, 9. Create a sense of urgency by using emojis, graphics and other tools that attract attention 10. Use videos (preferable not Youtube links but native/downloaded videos) 11. When you create posters, use no more than 2 colours. It becomes distracting after that 12. Don’t be shy. Ask for re-tweets or follows. People are happy to support each other and those who are not can just ignore your request, but you have nothing to lose by asking. Asking for retweets tells your followers what you need from them which makes it more likely they’ll follow through with the task. 13. The time of your Twitter updates play a big part in getting your messages out. You can master your timing by looking at your Twitter Analytics to see when your followers are around. Go to Twitter Analytics, then Tweets and hover over the columns on the graph to find the days when your tweets get the most impressions, these are interactions such as likes, re -tweets…etc) 14. Ask for people to be involved, ask questions, ask them to let you know what they think, message you information…etc 15. Don’t be afraid to tell personal stories and ask others to do the same in a reply. For example; I did this….., how about you?
