Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and while being single on the most romantic day of the year does suck a little, there are plenty of things that you can take advantage of if you’re not coupled up when the 14th February rolls around. Whether you have recently left the dating scene or have been solo for a while now, here are our four tips to take advantage of being single this Valentine’s and enjoy, rather than dread, the day. 1. Focus on Your Friends. Valentine’s Day is about love, but it doesn’t need to be the romantic type. Why not spend the day celebrating with your other single friends, (via Zoom if need be due to lockdown restrictions), and show them a little love? The past year has been hard for everyone, but you can help your fellow single ladies (or guys) in your tribe feel the love by sending flowers, or partaking in a Valentine's gift swap. Even a virtual dinner party can help to lift the mood for anyone feeling alone. It’s also a fun way to appreciate how much love you already have in your life, even if that doesn’t currently include a romantic partner. 2. Practice Self-Love. Valentine’s Day is also a great time to spend a little extra time focusing purely on yourself. For one, a lot of people will have romantic plans, meaning you have no excuse for not prioritising a little you time. The relationship with yourself is the most important, and many people say you cannot love others if you don’t love yourself first. By boosting your self-love, you will improve your outlook on life as a whole and increase your chances of finding a partner in the future. Whether that means indulging in a favourite hobby, such as treating yourself to an online cooking class or simply shutting off your email a little early and splurging on a takeaway and movie at home, with a face mask and bottle of wine. 3. Embrace the New Potential for Love. Many people are deterred from searching for the one on Valentine’s Day, but there is always the potential you may actually find a love match nearby. In fact, the 14th of February sees a surge in new users on dating apps, all looking to meet someone special, with some online dating sites seeing more matches on Valentine’s Day than any other day of the year. Therefore, Valentine’s day could actually be the best time to find a date! If you’re ready to find love, DateSmart is here to help. 4. Establish What You’re Looking For. If you’re actively looking for a new partner, another great way to spend Valentine’s Day as a single, is making a list of all the qualities you are looking for in a partner. This way, you can spend the rest of the year searching for someone worth your time and effort; and quickly let go of the ones who aren’t.
