We mentioned it before, but individualism was one of the pillars of Romanticism. During the Romantic Period the emotions of people became more important then ever before. Because it was a counter reaction to the enlightenment. in the enlightenment was the focus more on the rationalism. The next characteristic is the emphasize on the nature. The people in West-Europe felt that they lost the connection with nature though the industrialization. So, to get this connection back they traveled all over the world and witnessed retained connection with nature. Romanticism also became a way for the masses to escape their boring everyday lives with fantastical stories about far away land with mythological creatures, places that lack the usual hardships and imperfections of reality. Weltschmerz means that someone is tired of everything in this world. For example material possessions and the difficulties of everyday life. The last characteristic is the advent of nationalism. In the Romantic Period people were starting to search their identity and a collective unit. in order to create these things the people began to create heroic stories, name national heroes and a sense of belonging.
