Romanticism was among other things a literary movement that began in the late 18th century, ending around the middle of the 19th century although its influence continues to this day. This movement started in West-Europe. The Romanticism started as a reaction to the industrial revolution. During the industrial revolution most of the society moved from the countryside to the city. The reason why they did this was that they could get work in the factories. The workers in the factories were performing labour in horrendous circumstances. The working conditions were terrible and Romanticism offered the workers a way to indulge in escapism. Romanticism creates escapist fiction based on the past, the many different mythologies of the past and adventures in far away lands. It offers people a form of entertainment and relaxation that distracts them form the hardships of their day to day lives. Contrary to the enlightenment, romanticism focuses more on the individual, emotions and fantasy, rather than the masses, politics and rationality.
