Every day our lifesavers rescue about 30 people. Sadly 116 lives were lost because of drowning in 2016-17 More people die in rips every year than die from shark attacks, floods and cyclones combined. Here are six top tips for staying safe in the surf and having fun all summer long. First you always should swim between the yellow flags and read the safety sign. Secondly always beware of rip currents. Thirdly you should try to swim with a friend or someone in your family. Fourthly you should really know what to do if you get a bluebottle jellyfish stings. Fifthly you need to really beware of sunburn because you can get skin cancer. Sixthly Stay hydrated and keep cool to avoid heat exhaustion.
