The king Charles I did not really get along well with Parliament. There was a clash with Parliament The main reason was because Parliament was split into 2 parts: Royalists or Cavaliers. They were noble people/aristocrats or very rich landowners. They supported Charles I and they believed in the divine rights of Kings. The king was God on earth The Parliamentarians or roundheads (they didn't wear their hair long). They were more liberal, middle classes, puritan people who had strict religious rules. They were against the divine rights of Kings and they thought that you have to deserve heaven. Other reasons were: He imposed taxes without summoning the parliament He spent the money of the English population on personal and expensive interests, for example art. Van Dyck - The arch of Triumph(XVII century) This is a sort of venetian style/veronise style, this drapery reminds us of Tizian. The king is always melancholic. He's portrayed in armor. He has the baton and he's on a horse so this is an equestrian portrait This is the colton arms (symbol of the crown) It is Majestic, the king rules the population the same way he controls his horse. His head is really small compared ti the body. His sword is really long. Carles I was a maniac of art He decided to buy a lot of artistic treasures. One example can be the Mantegna's Triumphs (a symbol of power) The royal collection includes Mantegna's Triumphs He bought a lot of artistic treasures from the family of Mantua (the Gonzagas). So today we have in England a lot of Italian art.
