Now that you’ve come to the conclusion of this book, we hope you’re ready to begin a new chapter in your own life as a goaltender. Filled with many morsels of wisdom regarding the position, you should have plenty of new information to ponder and digest as you continue to reflect upon your current state of development. This should be an exciting time. It’s the chance for a rebirth, a revolution of your own evolution. It’s a chance to grow stronger, gain more experience, and perform at a higher level. But just like we stressed in the introduction, remember that the art of becoming an elite goaltender is a time-consuming process of maturing and molding into a higher state of consciousness. It does not happen overnight. Just like the iron sword is forged in fire and pounded into perfect form by the blacksmith, so too is your psyche and mental approach forged in the heat of many goaltending battles. Take each game as an opportunity to express yourself in a balanced and relaxed manner. Continue to embrace the fact that failures are necessary to achieving that flow; they allow you to learn more about the same type of “patterns” that Mitch Korn mentioned at the end of his interview. So as you move forward with the arrow of time, never be afraid to fail and never be afraid to try something new, because it is through change that we truly learn. At the same time, always strive to analyze your game and your mental approach with honesty. If you can’t be honest with yourself, you will never be able to determine which areas need work and which areas are already solid. You will stagnate and you will fall behind. ** “Everything you do, if not in a relaxed state will be done at a lesser level than you are proficient. Thus the tensed expert marksman will aim at a level less than his student.” –Bruce Lee As you learned throughout this book, when it comes to achieving the flow that goalies so desperately seek, one of the keys is learning how to play with a relaxed state of mind. When relaxed, we are worry-free, clear-headed and focused on the puck. And when we achieve those things, we play in the moment and we don’t hinder our own proficiencies. With so many things causing stress and anxiety in today’s society, the only way to truly escape those obstacles is to think less. One of the ways a goaltender learns how to think less is by establishing and perfecting their own unique routine. Regardless of what is going on in your personal life, your ability to get into the rhythm of that routine fully prepares you for the task at hand without having to worry about all of those external pressures. Routine is the essence of preparation – it allows you to find a comfortable space in your mind and stay occupied and focused on the different tasks needed to help you enter a state of true clarity and readiness. But beyond all of these tools, tricks, interviews, teaching points and words of advice, we’d like to impart one final and far-reaching piece of wisdom that encompasses all others. The answers you seek to any question regarding the position is already deep inside of you. Find those answers by first discovering more about who you are. Discover more about who you are by gaining more experience whenever you can. Gain more experience whenever you can by working hard, living in the moment, embracing the opportunity to play the greatest position in sports, and most importantly, by having fun. For as Valley says, “You play some of the best hockey in your life when you’re happy.”
