This video shows the journey of nuclear waste through the Box Encapsulation plant, known as B.E.P. B.E.P is a £1bn mega-project to build Nuclear Waste Processing Plant, to support High Hazard Reduction across Sellafield’s waste streams. The Project initially began in the 1990s, but was put in to “Care and Maintenance” in 2001 2002 during detailed design phase due to a change in strategy. The main civil structure was completed, as well as the shield doors and through wall liners. The current iteration of B.E.P was restarted in 2012, in which the scope of the project was to carry on from the initial design and meet the project functional specification, working within the confides of the built structure. B.E.P. takes waste from MSSS, FGMSP and PFCS. With MSSS being most of the waste processed. In terms of processing waste, B.E.P will: Treat or disrupt waste packages, grout waste if required, monitor and inspect packages and export packages for safe long term storage in BEPPS.
