Joey Luis Wee, 51, A lawyer was shot dead on November 23, 2020, by unidentified gunmen while he was walking to his office in Baragay Kasambagan, Cebu City. Attorney Joey Luis Wee, died from two gunshot wounds while he was being treated at a hospital. Initial police reports from Mabolo Police Station showed, that Wee had just stepped out of his car in front of Alchi Business Center at about 1:30pm, when the suspects, who were on board a motorcycle, shot him to death. The crime occurred almost a month after another lawyer in Cebu province, James Joseph Gupana, survived an ambush in Lapu-Lapu City. A young lawyer was also shot to death in Palawan, just as he was driving towards a court hearing. Wee’s family said that he was handling a few high profile cases prior to his death. A graduate of San Beda Law School, Wee was the counsel of former Rizal Palawan, Mayor Nicolas Montaño Sr., in the latter’s rape case. He also stood as the lawyer of former Department of Public Works and Highways officials ,who were allegedly behind the overpricing of lampposts that were installed for the 2007 Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit. He was also the lawyer of National Bureau of Investigation agents, who allegedly shot a van carrying several resort workers in Manddawwee City in 2003. The Integrated Bar of the Philippines Cebu City chapter condemned Wee’s slay. Cebu City Police Office is looking into whether the murder was related to his job, as Wee’s family had told police that the lawyer had been handling big cases prior to the incident. Cebu City Police Office Director Josefino Ligan, said the investigators will retrace the cases that were handled by Wee. According to Mabolo Police Station Chief Dindo Allarras , the shooting incident happened at 1:30 p.m., a few minutes after Wee arrived in the area. The building’s gate was open when Wee got out of his vehicle. As Wee was climbing the stairs to his office on the third floor, two men rushed at him. The gunman then shot the lawyer twice. The culprits fled the area afterwards. Allarras said, he failed to see the gunshot wounds on the victim as the latter had already been rushed to a private hospital. The Investigators check the security cameras of establishments near the crime scene to help them identify the culprits. On the other hand, The director of the National Bureau of Investigation, has ordered the NBI-Central Visayas to intensify the investigation into the killing of lawyer Joey Luis Wee, NBI Central Office has deployed four investigation agents, plus a forensic expert, a polygraph examiner and a cartographer to help them in their investigation. The National Bureau of Investigation has been tracked down and arrested in Laguna the suspect in the killing of Cebu lawyer Joey Luis Wee, and has taken into custody by the NBI,” NBI Depputy Director Ferdinand Lavin, identified the suspect as Fausto Edgar Peralta, A FORMER Philippine Army officer, who is the current supervisor of a security firm in Laguna. The gunman, Fausto Edgar Peralta, is one of the six suspects in Wee’s murder, according to the NBI. The suspect was turned over by the NBI Laguna office to the NBI 7. on the same day, Peralta and the other suspects were charged with murder before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office. NBI 7 Director Rennan Augustus Oliva, identified the other suspects as John Raymond Suarez, of Muntinlupa City, a certain Randy Palpparran, and three “John Does,”. Two of the suspects were identified by witnesses and other evidence. One of the witnesses was Wee’s wife, who identified Peralta and Suarez after seeing their pictures. Peralta was the main gunman, while Suarez acted as his backup. The other witnesses were from the rent-a-car establishment where the suspects rented a four-wheel getaway vehicle, a Toyota Vios, and the pension house where the suspects stayed in Cebu.
