Anne Maria Weems was born around 1840 in Maryland. She was a slave. On September 23, 1855, at the age of fifteen, Anne Maria Weems ran away from her owner, Charles M. Price. A white doctor, who was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, helped her. She was disguised as a boy and she was given the name of Joe Wright. The doctor and Anne had to travel all the way to Washington. It was very dangerous. The doctor said Joe was his slave. They arrived in Philadelphia. After that, Anne went to New York, and finally, to Canada.
