Bat soup originates from the Palau island located near Philipines. It is usually eaten in Oceania and South-eastern Asia, especially in Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia. It´s main ingredients are Fruit bats, water for broth, spices like ginger, sea salt and white pepper, garlic, onion, soy sauce and cream. So how is it made? First step is to wash and place bats, even with their fur, into kettle with your chosen spices. Cook for 60 minutes and then strain the broth into another kettle and skin the bats. Disrecard the skin and remove meat from the bones and return the meat into the broth. Then cook it for another 10 minutes and serve it with scallions and rice. You can also season it with the coconut milk, cream and soy sauce. In restaurants, the servers will usually come to you with a cage full of live bats and you can choose which one you want to eat. You can either choose to eat it as a soup or raw. If you choose raw, they will prepare the bat right in front of you, including the skinning of the bat. It is said that the meat tastes like chicken and in the past it was used as a remedy against respiratory disorders. It is also said that if you ate the eye of the bat, it would help you cure eye ilnesses. In 2019, there was a rumour regarding the coronavirus pandemic that it was caused by people eating bats in China. It was debunked because the chinese internet celebrity that ate it was actually in Indonesia and not in China. Bat soup is very unusual dish and it´s not to everyones tastes, but if you are feeling adventurous, you might as well try it!
