At skeletal maturity, the femoral head may be spherical with negligible increase in its diameter; such hips function well through adult life without developing secondary degenerative arthritis. Hips with coxa magna (enlarged femoral head), coxa brevis (short neck) and coxa irregularis (misshapen femoral head) or a combination of these changes are prone to develop arthritis . Stulberg et  al. classified hips of skeletally mature persons with healed LCPD into five classes based on the shape and size of the femoral head and congruency of the femoral head and the acetabulum . Class 1 and 2 hips have spherical femoral heads that are congruent with the acetabulum; they do not develop arthritis. Class 3 and 4 hips have non-spherical femoral heads but are still congruent with the acetabulum; they are likely to develop mild or moderate arthritis in late adult life. Class 5 hips are neither spherical nor congruent; they are likely to develop severe arthritis before the age of 50 years. A modified version of the Stulberg classification with just three classes has become popular recently
