Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) is an idiopathic disease and self limiting disorder of childhood characterized by interruption of blood supply to the capital femoral epiphysis. The blood supply is restored spontaneously over a period of 2 or 4 years. During this period the femoral head is vulnerable to deformation and in a proportion of children the spherical shape of the femoral head is lost. These children are prone to develop premature secondary degenerative arthritis in early adult life. The challenge of treating LCPD is to prevent degenerative arthritis by preserving the spherical shape of the femoral head.
