The dedication needed to become an elite goaltender begins inside of you. It begins when you decide to make a commitment to yourself to move forward in a specific area about which you feel passionate. It begins with holding a vision in your mind of how you foresee your life unfolding, and then it leads to a formulation of a plan to take you there. It begins as a spark that, when given enough oxygen, grows into a flame, from a flame into a fire, and from this fire, into a blazing determination to see your daily pursuits through all the way to the achievement of your goals. To remain dedicated to your goals requires high levels of persistence and patience. When you first make the commitment to the attainment of a goal, you must consider the multitude of directions available to you in order to achieve it. Like a roadmap, there are several possible routes you can travel to reach the same destination. You may set out upon one and discover that there are too many barriers in your way and you’re spending too much energy trying to get past them. You may stop for a moment and reconsider your path, and if so, you must have the persistence to remain committed to reaching your destination. You must have an open mind so that other options may present themselves to you. But above all, you must remain faithful to your vision and trust that you will get there, even if it is in the most unexpected of ways. You may be a goalie who has excellent practices, stellar games, and the strength of character to back your team up in key situations. However, you may still find yourself splitting time with your counterpart who, although capable of stopping a puck, does not consistently display these key characteristics. If this happens, it is easy to become discouraged. Perhaps you allow your frustration to cloud the vision you had originally created years ago. But if you expect to remain dedicated, you must persist through this setback. You must change the direction of your course so that you remain on track to your destination. In this case, you may decide to be a role model for your partner, leading by example and showing you have what it takes to persist. This displays a strong commitment not only to your team, but also to your position. After all, there is no better way to learn than by becoming a teacher. Furthermore, what does every successful teacher have and what does every role model possess? Patience. You must be patient as your journey unfolds. You must trust that by showing up every day and demonstrating that you have what it takes, you will be rewarded. Do not try to rush it and do not try to take steps that you are not prepared to take. Build a solid foundation, one that will withstand setbacks and allow you to continue moving forward. Have patience as you lay each brick, knowing that every step is an important part of the journey. Rise to each occasion and do your best; another opportunity is on the horizon. So trust in your vision, maintain a dedication to your craft, and have the persistence and the patience to turn your dreams into a reality.
