The ocean is the place where life began millions of years ago. But today it is living a big danger… It's because of man… Man started polluting the ocean in the 1960s, and since then he never stopped. Man polluted in many ways: Someone left garbage on the beach, and the wind and waves brought it to the open sea. Some factories flowed their waste directly to the sea. Someone took the garbage with some trucks and threw it into rivers and seas. Sometimes there were accidents, and some oil tankers released petroleum into the sea. Pollution came in so many forms! Because of the currents, the sea took all that garbage out to the open sea, and it created five big islands made completely of garbage. They are the "Great Garbage Patches". They are bigger than some states, and they are in every ocean: North and South Pacific, North and South Atlantic and Indian Ocean. In these garbage islands you can find many things: Plastic and paper bags, food wrappers, plastic and glass bottles, fishing nets, plastic cups and straws, plates, forks, knives and spoons, cans, and much more… Because of that, many sea creatures went through a great danger. For example, turtles ate plastic bags because they thought they were jellyfish. Some fish got stuck in bottles and plastic wraps. Some animals died because of the toxic oil stains… It is a big problem, and we caused it… But what can we do to make a change and stop ocean pollution?
