How an organization handles and protects their data is crucial to the security of the business. A company’s security protocols related to data protection can not only directly impact their ability to operate, but impact a customer base, and potentially, their bottom line. Customers have the expectation that their personal information is kept secure, and not meeting this expectation can mean a loss in business. In order to formulate a proper cyber security plan, it’s important to first address some key questions about how your handle your data. First, what kind of data does your business house? Organizations store a variety of data, some more sensitive than others, ranging from financial information, employee records, marketing designs, bank account information, or customer purchasing history. Some of this data is more valuable than others to cyber criminals. Once you understand what data you’re collecting, it is important to look at how the data is collected, handled, and protected. The more information being transacted across the organization, or to other organizations, the more at risk that data is of being compromised. It is important to have a policy in place around this, depending on where the data is travelling. Finally, once you have an understanding of the varying data you house, it is important to control who has access to the data. Only those with the need should have access, and there should be policies in place to ensure that data access is tracked and managed.
