Oral exam questions to use: Why do some characters have names and others don’t? M: I think the people who don’t have names, their jobs or what they believe in might be more important than their personal connection to everyone. For example the priest never uses his real name, because he only wants other people to see him as his belief. It’s also easy to understand who their character is. K: In my opinion it has something to do with their so-called “social status” or their identification. If you don’t have a name, people will call you by your nickname(?). Is people see you as a whiskey priest, they won’t think too highly of you. Throughout the book, the priest is unsure about whom re really is. Him not having a real name, resembles how he doesn’t know who he is/ How do the lieutenant and the priest resemble each other? K: They both live very modest and they both want to create a better environment and think the world is very corrupt. M: The lieutenant and the priest both want a better world, because they both think the world at that moment is not at its best. It’s just unfortunate that they both see that totally different. How are the lieutenant and the priest different from each other? M: The lieutenant wants all the churchers destroyed and no more religion, but the priest obviously wants the churchers back and wants to stop running from the police. K: The lieutenant wants to achieve his perfect world by using violence while the priest wants to create a better world with religion Do you think the priest is a proper priest? M: He can be sometimes, because when someone needs his help, he will offer it. For example when the mestizo said the gringo wanted a priest. The priest went with the mestizo even though he knew it would probably be a trap. However he is also a drunkard and has an illegitimate child with a person, which is not priest-like. K: He definitely doesn’t follow all the rules that apply to being a priest and he sometimes does things that really make me doubt him being a priest. Even Though he sometimes makes the wrong choices, he sometimes makes good choices. I believe that there is good in him, he just makes some mistakes but we humans make mistakes all the time Do you think the lieutenant is a proper human? M: I do think he believes that he is, but I don’t really think so. You should not kill people for what they believe. K: I think he can be a good human, but his way of using violence to get a perfect world is definitely not good at all Do you agree with the beliefs of the priest/lieutenant? M: I agree with the beliefs of the priest, because humans shouldn’t be killed for what they or someone else might believe in. Everyone has a right for an opinion. I also very much disagree with the lieutenant on the fact that he was killing hostages in cities the priest had been in. It was unnecessary to kill so many innocent people. K: I do agree with the fact taht the priest doesn’t want innocent people to die and I definitely do not believe that it is right to let people die for achieving your perfect world. What was the significance of Juan in this book? M: Juan and the priest resemble each other in this book. Juan was a martyr and some might say the priest was too, because he was killed for his beliefs. Only Juan was strong in the end, but the priest was weak. I think this shows that the priest was not a perfect priest and still human. K: Juan was an example of a marty and he was a good priest and died without any regrets while the priest himself was weak and scared of death. I believe Juan was used to show the reader what kind of priest the priest was compared toother proper priests How does the way Graham Greene describe the priest and lieutenant signify their character? K: The priest is described as a chubby small man whose clothes are disheveled. This suits the slightly chaotic character and the fact that he is puzzled throughout the book. The lieutenants looks are described as dapper and well-kept which shows that the lieutenant is kind of strict and organized in his ways. Why does Graham Greene refer to toothaches or malformed teeth a lot throughout the book? M: It probably has something to do with mr. Tench, as he is a dentist.
