Some state that governments should control the amount of violence on television in order to reduce the amount of violent crimes in society. However, others are against giving the government power to control the content of what people watch. Discuss both views and state your opinion on this matter. Violent scenes are often shown on easily accessible media such as TV. Some people say that governments should regulate the amount of violence shown on TV since such exposure could lead people to become more inclined to commit serious crime. However, others are against strengthening governmental control. I personally do not think that governments should be given so much power as to control what people see on TV. Those who support the idea of governments controlling the amount of violence shown on TV are strong believers of the theory that seeing violence on TV makes serious crime rates increase. According to this particular view, if people see fewer violent scenes on TV, the number of serious crime cases will be reduced. Since it is difficult for private sectors to conduct extensive regulations, it would be best for governments to exercise their power to solve this issue. In contrast to this, there are a number of people who are more cautious about giving the government such unrestricted power. There must be other factors that make people commit crimes other than just seeing a few violent scenes on TV. For example, growing up in an unstable household, lack of sufficient education, and innate personality traits could also be triggers for crime. There should be milder ways to prevent people from being overly exposed to violence, such as introducing TV ratings, and encouraging parents to keep an eye on what their children watch. Taking both viewpoints into full consideration, I do not support the idea of governments placing strict regulations on the amount of violence shown on TV. There is no guarantee that just doing this will actually reduce crime in society, and giving the government excessive power could lead to the violation of peoples freedom.
