The death penalty is the best form of punishment for people who commit serious crimes. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement In many countries, those who commit serious crimes like murder are often sentenced to death as a way for them to pay for their actions. However, I do not think that the death penalty is the most effective form of punishment for serious crimes. I would suggest that life imprisonment be made the most severe sentence. Criminals should spend the rest of their lives carrying the guilt of what they did. If they are put to death, this means that there will be less time to contemplate their wrongdoings and to feel remorse towards all the people who were negatively affected by their criminal actions. Those who commit serious crimes should have to live their entire lives facing extreme shame and guilt. The death penalty will only relieve them of this lifelong moral burden. On top of this, nobody is actually willing to engage themselves in the act of killing another human being. Therefore, having to execute a criminal poses an emotional burden on those who actually have to carry out the sentence. There are many cases where death penalties cannot be carried out because nobody wants to do the dirty work. From this perspective, life imprisonment is less morally daunting for the authorities. Understandably, most families of victims want criminals to be sentenced to the most severe form of punishment. Even so, if the criminal is given the death penalty, it can still impose an emotional burden on these families since they will have to live with the pang of conscience for having sent another person to their death. There are many reasons why people may theoretically favour the death penalty, but just as many convincing arguments why it does not work in practice. Life imprisonment should replace the death sentence as the highest penalty. It makes sure that criminals spend the rest of their lives paying for what they did and also alleviates the stress and burden on families and the authorities.
