I strongly oppose reducing library hours for three important reasons. First, libraries provide essential services that many residents rely on. As a university student, I use the library daily to access free computers, study spaces, and research materials I can’t afford otherwise. Many seniors in my neighborhood also depend on library programs for social connection and technology help. Reducing hours would disproportionately affect students, job seekers, and elderly citizens who need these resources most. Second, the proposed cost savings are minimal compared to the damage caused. The city’s report shows this cut would save only 150,000 annually – just 0.2 of the municipal budget. Meanwhile, studies show every dollar invested in libraries generates 46 in economic value through literacy programs and career support. As a taxpayer, I believe this is a poor financial decision that will ultimately cost our community more. Finally, libraries are vital community hubs. My local branch hosts free English classes, children’s reading circles, and job fairs – all services that strengthen our neighborhood. Fewer hours would force these programs to cancel, hurting community bonds. Instead of cuts, I suggest exploring alternatives like volunteer programs or small donations from frequent users like myself. The library’s value far outweighs its small budget impact, and I urge the city to protect this irreplaceable resource.
