Stephen Glass, from Highland Park, Illinois, started his journalism career as the editor of his college newspaper and joined The New Republic as an editorial assistant in 1995, quickly becoming an associate editor known for his engaging writing. Adam Penenberg, a Forbes reporter, exposed his fabricated article about a teenage hacker's exploits in 'Hack Heaven', which ended his career in 1998. Glass's firing and D.A.R.E.'s libel suit were the result of an investigation by The New Republic that revealed a pattern of fabrications in 41 articles. Despite earning his degree at Georgetown Law School, he was denied admission to the bar. The public became aware of his deception story, which led to a CBS News interview and the movie Shattered Glass (2003), which highlighted the importance of integrity in journalism.
