Greetings dear friends I am Pindar, a student of the poet Corinna, I define myself as an itinerant poet and I am the singer of the aristocracy. I descend from the noble family of the Egidi, originally from Sparta, but I was born in Cynoscephalae, in Thessaly. I have traveled extensively through Magna Graecia, always a welcome guest of important families and sovereigns whose deeds I have transformed into myth. At the height of my poetic maturity, at 40 years of age, I left Athens to land in Akragas and to this magnificent and rich city and to Theron, its Tyrant, I have dedicated extraordinary praise and songs. I have defined Akragas the most beautiful city of mortals and perhaps, also for this reason, today, you find me here, among the illustrious figures who have made its history.
