Greetings to you friends I am Phalaris. Tyrant of Akragas. I belong to a generation of “autocrats” of the archaic era and I took power of this city around 571 BC, about ten years after its foundation. Historians do not agree on the news that concern me. Therefore, my figure, in many aspects, remains shrouded in legend and myth. I am depicted as cunning and cruel and more than for the construction of the first city walls, I am remembered for having built the socalled bull of Phalaris, a splendid bronze artifact, inside which I roasted my enemies who, screaming in pain, simulated the bellow of the animal. Needless to say, the first to end up inside was its own builder, Perillo. For this reason, I have become a prototype of ferocity and cruelty. Many, over time, have spoken of me Pindar recounted my deeds and Dante, in the twentyseventh canto of the Inferno of his Divine Comedy, speaks of my bull. My end is also a matter of controversy. And there are those who say that, victim of a conspiracy, I too, with my mother and my advisors, found death inside the famous bull. If it really had happened that way we could say “He who wounds a bull…”
