For Pol Pot, anyone who opposed this vision—even in thought—was an enemy. Intellectuals, teachers, doctors, anyone who wore glasses or knew a foreign language, were marked for death. Paranoia spread like wildfire through the regime, and thousands were arrested, tortured, and executed. The infamous Tuol Sleng prison, known as S-21, became a place of unimaginable horror. Here, prisoners were subjected to brutal torture before being sent to the “Killing Fields,” where they were executed and buried in mass graves.
