It was April 17, 1975, when the Khmer Rouge, led by a man named Pol Pot, marched into the capital city of Phnom Penh. People cheered, believing that the long years of war were finally over. But little did they know, this was the beginning of something far worse. Within hours, the entire population of Phnom Penh—millions of men, women, and children—was forced to leave their homes. The Khmer Rouge soldiers, wearing black and armed with rifles, ordered everyone to march into the countryside, telling them it was only for a few days. But that was a lie.
