Saint Jerome The saint – a biblical scholar, translator, theologian and Roman Christian monk – is depicted as a half-naked hermit, in the act of writing the revision of the Bible. The usual attributes of the lion, the skull and the cardinal’s hat (galero) are not present. Jerome was born around 347 in Stridone near Aquileia in Dalmatia, educated in letters by his father. He perfected his studies in Rome, Gaul and Germany. He lived as a hermit for some years in the desert of Chalcis. He lived in Constantinople where he deepened his study of Greek with Gregory of Nazianzus (one of the Cappadocian fathers). He returned to Rome and – appointed cardinal and secretary to Pope Damasus – received the task from the pontiff to revise the ancient translation of the Bible on the Greek texts. Having retired to Bethlehem, he died in a monastery in 420.
