Saint Gregory the Great The saint – monk, abbot and liturgist – is represented together with the holy fathers and doctors of the church, Augustine, Jerome and Ambrose, in papal robes with his head covered by a tiara, to the right of which appears the dove of the Holy Spirit that inspires his writings. In fact, the Doctor is captured while writing on a volume resting on his left leg. Gregory was born into a noble Roman family in about 535. He studied law and in 573 became governor of Rome. Upon his father’s death, he used his inheritance to found monasteries in Sicily and Rome. Here he dedicated himself to the needy and retired as a Benedictine monk in Sant’Andrea al Celio, originally the family palace. From here in 579 he was sent to Constantinople by Pope Pelagius II as apostolic nuncio. In 586 he returned to Rome, became abbot and, upon the death of Pelagius II, succeeded him, acclaimed by the entire city. Author of pastoral, moral and spiritual writings; legislator, he devoted himself to the liturgy and sacred song until his death in 604.
