All the gods and goddesses spent most of their time eating and drinking. It seems that banqueting was their first really commitment. Only one goddess never was invited to the feasts: the goddess of contention because she always set gods and goddesses against one another. One day a banquet was going on as usual and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. The goddess of contention was so angry with all her colleagues that she decided to take a revenge against them. One day, during a banquet, she unexpectedly threw a golden apple on the table shouting: “To the most beautiful!” Hera, Zeus's wife, Athena the goddess of wisdom and craft and Aphrodite the goddess of love, tried to catch it. Hera was the first to do it. She shouted: “I'm the wife of the almighty Zeus and this apple is mine!” Athena shouted: “I'm beautiful and powerful, so this apple must be mine.” Aphrodite: shouted: “I'm the most beautiful. All men admire me, this apple belongs to me.” Zeus intervened and suggested to divide the apple in three parts. Hera didn't like the decision and so it was agreed that a mortal would make the choice. Paris, son to the king of Troy, was pasturing his flock when the three goddesses appeared before him. All the three goddesses looked just splendid in their beauty. Paris couldn't believe his ears when they told him that he had to hand the golden apple to the most beautiful of the three. Mind you, bribery seemed to be common even among gods. Hera, the most cunning one whispered to his ear: “Give it to me, and I'll make you the most powerful man in the world.” Athena, the goddess of war, “Give it to me, and I’ll make you an unbeatable warrior.” Aphrodite said to him: “If you give me the apple, I'll marry to you the most beautiful among the mortal women: Helen, Menelaus' wife.” Paris had no doubts. Aphrodite's promise sounded decidedly the most tempting and he gave the golden apple to her. The consequences of all this was the burst of the Trojan war. But this is another story.
