The Chinese restaurant was right opposite my house. I had never been to a Chinese restaurant before, but I had been told that Chinese food was really delicious. One evening I invited my fiancée to dinner. When we got there my fiancée seemed reluctant to try Oriental food. She didn’t complain, but she didn’t look pleased either. To comfort her I told her that this particular restaurant served Continental dishes as well. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by an old Chinese waiter who ushered us to a table in a corner. The decoration reminded you of the Far East. There were inscriptions of Chinese proverbs on the walls with the English translation below. There were also pictures of pagodas and dragons. When we were brought the menu we didn’t know what to order, so I asked the waiter to bring us whatever he considered most delicious. We had soup at first. It was a shrimp soup which I must admit it wasn’t really to my taste. My fiancée thought it was marvellous. Then we had meat balls with onion and noodles. When I tried the first meat ball I found it was very sweet. I asked for some salt but the waiter said I would spoil the dish, if I added any. He said this was a very popular Chinese dish. Meantime, my fiancée was eating her meat balls greedily. I made an effort to go on with mine, but I could hardly swallow them, though I was really hungry. The only thing left for me to do was to order a plain omelette with chips. That, certainly, was the tastiest omelette I had ever had. When we left the restaurant my fiancée said, ‘I wish I could have Chinese food every day!’
