Peter remembers when he and his sister Jane passed their exams brilliantly at university. Their parents were so happy and proud of their results that they offered them a trip to Venice. They had never been to Venice before. It was the town of their dreams. They had read a lot about this town on the water and at last they could visit it. They just couldn’t wait. They were very happy when one morning they went down into the kitchen for their breakfast and they saw two tickets to Marco Polo Airport on the table. On the very first day of their arrival, they left their bags unpacked in the hotel and hurried to take a gondola and had a tour on the “Canal Grande”. They took a lot of pictures to show to their parents and friends. They enjoyed this trip like a beautiful dream, admiring old palaces built in the water, Venetian blinds everywhere and staircases to the houses. Like in a dream suddenly Jane stood up to have a better view of the house where Marco Polo was born. “Hey, be careful!” Peter shouted. But it was too late. She unfortunately overbalanced and upset the gondola, and fell into the water. The water wasn’t deep but it was cold and muddy. She was dripping wet. It was really an unpleasant swim. “Don’t worry!” said the gondolier trying to cheer them up. “The hotel isn’t far from here.” That evening, in order to forget that unpleasant adventure, Jane and Peter chose one of the best restaurants in Venice overlooking the “Canal Grande” and enjoyed a wonderful meal. When they got home, Peter told his parents about the unpleasant adventure and showed them the pictures they had taken. Peter showed them also the picture where Jane was floundering in the water trying to keep afloat. Their mum burst with laughter while their dad looked worried. You know, Jane is the apple of his eyes.
