Helen packed her small suitcase, glanced at the clock on the wall and realized she was rather late. Her plane would take off in an hour. She had no time to lose if she didn’t want to miss her flight. Where was her passport? She was sure she had put it somewhere, but now she couldn’t remember where. She felt at a loss. She looked for it in the coat pockets, then in the bag and at last she found it under the case she was packing. She had been delayed; she couldn’t leave the office earlier as she had planned to do because her manager had asked her to send some more emails at the last moment. They were very urgent, he said. Helen hadn’t been on holiday for years and she didn’t want to miss this short stay in Spain relaxing on a deserted beach. At the travel agency she had been assured there wouldn’t be many tourists this time of the year in Spain. She had phoned for a taxi. It should be outside waiting for her. She went to the window and looked out. There it was. She dashed out dragging her case behind her. “I’m sorry to be late”, said the taxi driver, “but I’ve been caught in a traffic jam.” “Anyway”, said Helen, “I must be at the airport in less than half an hour. Do you think we can get there on time?” “If we take a short cut, I’m sure we will,” answered the driver. Helen got in and sat down. It was then that she noticed an umbrella on the seat “Whose umbrella is this?” she asked the driver. “It must be the last passenger’s,” answered the driver. “She was an old lady with a funny hat. She was very superstitious. She didn’t want to pay me when she saw the number of my car was thirteen.” Helen was not superstitious at all. Her only wish was to get to the airport in time. After running through a narrow street, the taxi got to the airport in time. Once there, Helen rushed out of the taxi to the check- in. There a blond girl informed her her plane had been cancelled because of a sudden strike. The only thing left for her to do was to wait for the next plane.
