When Nick was sixteen or seventeen, he used to have terrible arguments with his father. He wanted Nick to become an accountant, like him. But Nick wasn’t doing very well at school. First, he failed his exams. He should have passed them quite easily, but he hadn’t worked hard enough. His father wasn’t very pleased about that. And then he got into trouble at school. He wanted to take a few days off, so he had written a letter saying that he was ill. He had signed the letter with his father’s name. When the headmaster found out, he wanted to expel him. But his parents went to see him and he let Nick stay on. Nick hated his school. He thought it was a terrible place, full of really boring teachers. There was only one teacher that he liked. He taught music. He was different from the other teachers. He was quite young. And he seemed to enjoy music and like teaching it. He started teaching Nick the guitar. Nick got very interested in it. He used to go to his teacher’s house every week. After the lesson was over, they drank coffee and listened to records. They used to talk for hours. It was wonderful for Nick to find someone he could really talk to. Nick loved learning the guitar. Soon he became quite a good player. He decided to become a professional musician. He knew it would be difficult, but he wanted to try, but his father didn’t like the idea. Of course, Nick didn’t want to tell him at first, because he knew he wouldn’t understand. But one day his father said he wanted to talk to him. He asked Nick what he wanted to do when he left school. Nick told him he wanted to be a musician. His father said the career in music was very risky. He said he ought to become an accountant, because it was a very safe job. They talked for a long time. The longer they talked the more depressed Nick got. Of course, Nick could see that his father was right in a way. He knew it would be more sensible to pass his exam and get a nice safe job. But he didn’t want to do that. Nick was only interested in playing the guitar. That was all he wanted to do!
