Carol was looking for a flat. She found it quite by chance when she was going to visit some friends who lived on the other side of the town. She reached the station too early. The best way, she thought, to kill time would be to take a walk. As she was strolling down this street of old houses, she saw a notice in a first-floor window. She rang the agents and they said she could have the keys as soon as she liked. The flat was quite clean and the rent was very low. Everything had gone so easily that she began to suspect a catch. She spent a week painting and cleaning the rooms before she moved in. It was a week later that the knocking began at night. One evening, Carol went to bed early after a long day’s hard work. She was just falling asleep when she heard someone knocking at the door. She got up, put the light on, and went to the door, but there was no one there. The next night there was no knocking at the door, but in the middle of the night she woke up for some reason and saw an old woman standing in the room. Carol switched on the light and she disappeared. Carol was really very worried and stayed awake for the rest of the night. Some days later, she found out that flat had stood empty for months. Its owner, an eccentric old lady, had died in rather strange circumstances. The house had acquired a bad name and it was rumoured to be haunted.
