Linda’s mother always recommended her daughter, “Before leaving make sure that all the doors and windows are locked.” You can imagine Linda’s shock when she got home from school yesterday and found the front door unlocked. She got even more stunned when she walked into the hallway and saw a strange man fast asleep on the sofa in the living room! She didn’t shout but left the house immediately, went to her neighbour’s house and called the police. She explained what had happened. Two policemen arrived in a short while, and Linda returned to the house with the two policemen. It was too late. The man had disappeared. Just then her father appeared at the head of the stairs. He was in a cheerful mood. And he wasn’t alone. He was with the man she had seen fast asleep in the sitting room. “I have a surprise for you,” he said. “This is my cousin Ken. On his way to Paris to see his girlfriend, he has decided to stop in England for a couple of days. I haven’t seen him for a long time. He called me yesterday but I forgot to tell you. I couldn’t go to pick him up at the airport, but I explained him where the door key was and I also told him to help himself with everything that was in the fridge. He fell asleep because of the jet lag.”
