Last summer, soon after the school finished, Francy decided to improve her English. Her boyriend had spent a couple of months in England and when he got back to school his English had improved a lot. His English was just fantastic. So, one morning Francy took her decision. She said to herself, “Next summer, instead of getting burned on the sand of my usual beach, I will go to England and learn English properly.” She packed her case and flew to a small town in the north of England, far away from large cities where it wouldn’t be so easy to meet other Italian students. She stayed with a family. Her first day in Scarborough, this was the name of the town where she stayed, was Sunday. So, she got up late. She had a big English breakfast. Then, she stayed at home for the rest of the day. She cleaned her room and then she did some work on her computer. Her landlady was very kind and generous. She spoke very slowly to make herself understood, and in the evening, instead of watching telly, she talked with Francy about Italy and her family. She had never been to Italy, but she had booked a flight to Florence for the following year and she couldn’t wait to get there and around. It wasn’t so easy to learn colloquial English. Her English teacher at school in Italy never spoke English like that. Francy’s English was hopeless. One morning she was on the bus to school and a man spoke to her, but she hardly understood him. She was so embarrassed. Why was her English improving so slowly? She wanted to make lots of friends, but this wasn’t happening so easily. She felt shy, and it was hard for her to talk to people, even to her classmates. She liked them, but sometimes she couldn’t understand them. Every morning, on her way to the private school she attended, she usually met the milkman. He smiled at her and said something like, ‘naisdeiany?’ Francy wondered ‘Do the English speak English?’ Sometimes, she felt homesick. She missed her friends, her family, her boyfriend and the beach. Gradually, the things went better and better and after a month she just felt at home and a lot of new sounds became familiar to her ears.
