“What’s for dinner?” asked John as soon as he got home last Friday after a week of hard work. “We’re having roast beef” answered his wife Betty. “I don’t feel like roast beef because I had roast beef for lunch.” “Let’s go to that new restaurant in Clinton street. I’ve heard it’s very good.” Suggested Betty. John and Betty went to the restaurant. It was pleasantly decorated, but there were not many customers. They sat at a table and the waiter brought the menu. “I’ll have fish” said Jim. “What do you want Betty” “I’d like a veal chop” answered Betty. Jim turned to the waiter, “A Dover sole for me and a veal chop for my wife.” And we want some potatoes and peas.” The waiter looked embarrassed, “I’m sorry, sir. We haven’t any fish and we haven’t any veal chops.” John could not believe his ears. “But they are on the menu1! Said John angrily. “I’m sorry, sir” the waiter answered “that’s yesterday’s menu. The cook fell ill and we have only some nice roast beef.” “No, I’m afraid I don’t like roast beef”, said John. “We’d better have spaghetti, then” suggested Betty.
