Jeffrey had already waited three hours in the airport waiting-room. He had already consumed three pints, a packet of cigarettes and he didn’t know how many sandwiches when the loudspeaker announced something. He didn’t pay much attention to what they announced as he had so often been disappointed that day, but he caught the words ‘…announce the arrival of the flight number 457 from…and he strained his ears to hear the next words, but he failed to hear the end of the announcement. A couple of minutes later the roar of aircraft engines covered all other sounds and Jeffrey strolled over to the arrival gate to watch the passengers walk in across the tarmac. One by one the passengers came down the steps and Jeffrey counted fifteen before he saw what he thought must be John. Jeffrey pushed his way through the crowd and stood directly beside the door John was to come through. Eleven, twelve, a woman and her little son. Yes, there he was! Jeffrey stepped forwards and touched him lightly on the shoulder. “Hello, John!” Jeffrey said, holding out his arm to shake him by the hand. The man turned his face towards Jeffrey with eyes that showed no recognition. Jeffrey realized that he was a complete stranger, he had never seen in his life before.
