When Jim got back home, he couldn’t find his door keys. Last night all his friends invited him to go out and try a new beer called ‘Old Peculiar’. He didn’t feel like going out because he was waiting for a very important call. His friends insisted and he went with them. Jim rang the bell, but nobody came to open the door. He rang again, and waited, but still there was no answer. He walked round the house to see if he could find any open window, but they were all locked. It was beginning to rain and he didn’t know what to do. Dorothy, his wife, had obviously gone out, and he didn’t know where she had gone to, or when she could return. He waited for half an hour. Still nobody came. Finally, feeling wet and cold and angry, he picked up a big stone and threw it into the kitchen window. Just as he had unlocked the window and was climbing through it when he heard the front door open. His wife had come back! Jim had forgotten that it was Wednesday, the so called ‘hen night’, that’s what people call the day when all the ladies go out, while their husbands stay at home, looking after the children and taking them to bed. Friday evening is the day of the week when, on the contrary, all the ladies stay at home and their husbands go out while their wives take care of the children. This outing is called ‘stag night’
