MALES ORDER BRIDE, SCENE ELEVEN ------ MODESTY: We need to spend more time together where we can talk, some place more suitable than a hotel lobby. I know, you can take me to dinner tonight. We'll get a secluded little table in the hotel's dining room, private, quiet. GRUBBY: Good idea missy. That's what we're planning to do too. FORREST: Fellas, what are you doing here? LUCKY: We came to invite our fiancees to dinner too, and we're not going to take no for an answer! C.D.: We've seen so little of our ladies, we'd be lucky to recognized them on our wedding day. GRUBBY: That ain't you is it Golda, all cleaned up? MODESTY: Me? No, I'm, I'm Modesty Virtue, Forrest's fiancee. GRUBBY: We'll shoot. FORREST: Excuse my manners Modesty, these are my friends. Grubby Shurtz, Lucky Betts, and C.D. Nichols. C.D.: We intended to ask you two to join us tonight, but since you've already made plans to dine here, we'll join you. If that's all right? GRUBBY: A dinner party! LUCKY: For all four couples. C.D.: Our fiancees will have to accept our invitations. We won't leave until they do. GRUBBY: Let's go bang on their doors now! MODESTY: Wait! You insist that all four of us ladies have dinner with you together at the same time tonight? C.D.: We do! LUCKY: Come on! MODESTY: No stop! I' uh, I'll go up and, uh, let the others know you're, uh, counting on their company at dinner. Forrest? FORREST: I, I'll be there, too. I owe you that much. STARR: (Mutters to herself) Wait till I get my hands on Harry! He got me into this mess, He'll have to help me get out of it! (She Exits) FORREST: So that's what I told her. I sure hope Modesty will let me break my vow so I can marry Cal, with your permission of course Grubby. GRUBBY: You got that Forrest. I already care for you like a son, son. LUCKY: You and Cal, a twosome? That's real nice. Don't you think so C.D.? C.D.: I always have. Well men, if we're going to dine with our fiancees this evening, I suppose we should go freshen up a little. Or a lot. GRUBBY: What you looking at me, for? I always wash my hands before I eat, the bottoms, anyway. C.D.: I'm so relieved to hear that. LUCKY: I need to get back to the saloon and let Trinket and Tiara know they'll have to run things while I'm having dinner with Lola. Come on, I'll treat you all to a drink on the house. C.D.: Don't mind it I do. FORREST: Thanks, Lucky. GRUBBY: Count me in. There's one thing I need from you more than a drink though. LUCKY: What's that Grubby? GRUBBY: Your spittoon
