Hi I’m Charlie, Let me tell you a story… They were my best friends. Farin. Dexter. Zach. The four of us were ten years old standing under a full moon. For context farins aunt was really into voodoo from her trips she had taken to Haiti in her youth and we’d often try and scare each other by reciting passages we found in her old battered books from her travels. "We're going to make sure we stay friends forever" Dexter giggled, spiking our fingers with a needle. We recited the phrase….. “mò yo ap rete” And then “a bond as close as ours can never be broken and if so we will pay the price and be brought together again and again” 15 years later, Farin forgot to invite me to her wedding. I was heart broken, my childhood friend then I have gone through life with. DIDNT INVITE ME TO HER WEDDING! I slapped her. Right in front of her new husband. "You bitch!" pretending not to notice Zach filming the whole thing. "Charlie, you're embarrassing yourself." Dexter sang, his icy breath tickling my cheek. I shoved him back. "You invited Dex and him." I shrieked, gesturing to Zach, who rolled his eyes. "But not me?" "Go fuck yourself, Farin." I turned to the sheepish looking boys. "We are not friends." The second the words left my mouth, I felt a shift in the air and I heard the phrase “mò yo ap rete” echo in my head….. I saw it in the others too, like a switch had been pulled. Farin's bouquet of flowers slipped out of her hands. Zach picked up a glass of champagne, smashed it against the table, and slit Dexter's throat. But Dexter didn't even cry out. He moved like an animal. With blood seeping down his neck, he twisted around like an animal, lunging for Zach, before his eyes rolled to the back of his head. When he dropped to the ground, Zach moved towards Farin. But the bride was already ready for him. She kicked him backwards, a single stiletto heel to the chest making him drop his weapon, then plunging the broken champagne glass directly through his skull. I could feel myself moving back, but a wave of poison was already running through me. In a single step I didn't remember taking, I moved to stab her in the eye with my heel. Farin was expecting me, however. My ex best friend held a weapon like she knew how to use it, her eyes vacant, twisted and wrong. Before I could strike, she sliced straight through my gut, kneeling and feeling the life force leave me I looked up and there! with no expression the new bride drew the blade across her own throat….everything went black. I can’t explain why or how but I woke up in a morgue with a cold steel bed below me, I get up and instantly felt my survival instincts kick in, knowing the others are out there….my mortal enemy’s and closest friends. From then on, every day was a hunt. On Monday, Dexter drowned me in my pool. Tuesday, Farin shot me in the back of the head. Wednesday, Zach pushed me into the path of a truck. I drilled into Dexter's skull, ripped out Farin's heart, and severed Zach's head. But…..we always come back. Always on the hunt for one another. The more times we die, the less humanity comes back with us. Dex has started to enjoy killing. His hysterical laughter while slowly sawing off my head still echoes in my mind. His eyes sometimes leak moonlight, like there's a crack inside him. Splintering. It's like a never ending game of hide and seek. We are soldiers following the orders of our ten year old selves. So, in a way, I guess it really is best friends forever. “mò yo ap rete”
