The playable demo of Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown is available on Steam right now. Youtube is flooded with gameplay videos and mixed reviews. I was one of those that looked forward to playing this game, but I am disappointed. The download and installation were without issue. I loaded the game expecting enjoyment and was met with nothing but frustration. The first problem was that my steering wheel wasn't detected. I have a Moza R9 base, but my wheel is a real wheel for a real car. Setup can be a challenge, but this just doesn't work. I tried using a combination including an XBox controller. No dice, in fact, it made the controller unusable, as well. I am not new to using demo software, I beta tested many games, beginning in the late 90's, so I was prepared to do some work to get some enjoyment. My reality, however, was that I never did get it working and my attempts resulted in the game freezing to the point that it required a hard reboot to get out. This happened three times before I gave up. No, my computer isn't the problem. I have a very recent high end gaming rig with enough power to run this game easily. The problem stemmed from my non standard controller setup. I uninstalled Solar Crown, but it got me thinking. Do we really need another game like this? With all the mods available in Assetto Corsa and Beam N G, can I have a similar experience with what I already have? You wont see any Solar Crown gameplay here, I couldn't play it. What you will see is the fun I had playing Beam n g instead. Watch this, watch the reviews, make your own choice. I do this to have fun, not to suffer frustration. So, do we really need another game like this? For me, the answer is a resounding no.
