California is a federated state of the United States of America located on the southern West Coast, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With approximately 39.2 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in the United States, and with its 400.000 square kilometers of area, it is the third largest by land area. It also constitutes the most populous administrative division in North America and the thirty-fourth most populous in the world. The Greater Los Angeles area and the San Francisco Bay Area are respectively the second and fifth most populous urban areas, the former with 18.7 million residents and the latter with 9.6 million. Sacramento is the state capital, while Los Angeles is the most populous city and the second largest in the United States. Los Angeles County is the most populous county in the United States, while San Bernardino County is the largest. San Francisco is the second most populous city in California and the fifth in the United States. The economy of California, with a gross domestic product of 2.7 trillion dollars in 2020, is the largest sub-national economy in the world. If it were a nation, it would be the fifth-largest economy in the world. The Greater Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Areas are the second and third largest urban economies in the United States, following the New York Metropolitan Area. The San Francisco Bay Area statistical area is home to five of the ten largest companies by market capitalization and four of the ten wealthiest individuals in the world. Many contributions to popular culture, entertainment, and sports come from California; in the fields of communications, information, innovation, environmentalism, economics, and politics, the state is very active as well. Hollywood is in California, the world's oldest and largest film industry, which has had a profound influence on global entertainment. It is considered the birthplace of the hippie counterculture, surf culture, the car culture, and the personal computer, among other innovations. The San Francisco Bay Area and Greater Los Angeles are generally seen as centers of global technology and the film industry, respectively. The California economy is highly diversified: 58% is based on finance, government, real estate, technology, and professional, scientific, business, and technical services. Although it accounts for only 1.5% of the state's economy, California agriculture has the highest yield of any other state in the United States. The extremely diverse geography of the state ranges from the Pacific coast and metropolitan areas in the west to the Sierra Nevada mountains in the east, and from temperate rainforests in the north to desert climates in the interior, to snowy alpine climates in the mountains. All these factors lead to a huge need for water; over time, droughts and wildfires have become more frequent and severe due to climate change and water extraction, becoming less seasonally dependent and more constant throughout the year, putting increasing pressure on electricity supply and water security, and causing a significant impact on trade and industry, as well as agriculture.
