My name is arpan kaur deol, today i am going to discuss how to keep yourself and the environment safe at the laboratory. the lab environment is hazardous by nature It's your responsibility to know and follow the rules and be able to recognize potential safety hazards. There are some rules to follow before entering lab The first consideration is proper dress what you wear in the lab can help prevent serious, even fatal injuries. Often you'll be working with chemicals that could harm you. They come into contact with your skin. So the best way to prevent skin exposure is to wear clothes that cover your entire body. shorts and sandals leave your skin exposed. So instead, wear long pants and close toed shoes. Also Remove jewelry before entering the lab. Bring only the things that you need into the lab. Leave all personal items like backpacks, purses or jackets outside so they don't become contaminated. Now that you're properly dressed for the lab, let's take a look at personal protective equipment or PPE. For general lab work, a lab coat, safety glasses or goggles and gloves are required. Always button your coat and try to keep the cuffs tucked into your gloves. Wear a chemical apron if you're working with splash hazards, or reactive solutions. Safety glasses can protect your eyes from flying debris. Always wear gloves and make sure to choose the most appropriate gloves that are resistant to the chemicals you'll be handling. These gloves should be non absorbent, to avoid contact with chemical Thermal and puncture resistant gloves are used for handling extremely hot or cold materials, Some chemicals produce dangerous vapors. A respirator can protect you, from harmful vapour and gases being released. Its always adviced to use a respirator while working with fumes. There are some safe lab practices that must be followed 1. Plan Your Work and estimating the risk Before conducting any experiment, you should access the hazards related to the work, including; what are the worst possible things that could go wrong, how to deal with them, and what are the prudent practices, protective facilities and equipment necessary to minimize the risk of exposure to the hazards. 2. Inspection of equipments Inspect equipment and apparatus for weaknesses, cracks or damage before beginning work. Inspect electrical equipment and cords for frayed wiring or damage before use. Discard or repair damaged equipment before use 3. Personal safety Always wear chemical splash goggles for eye protection when working with chemicals. Always wear gloves when handling chemicals. Always wear appropriate clothing: chemically resistant lab coats or aprons are recommended. 4. Work under supervision If you are new to laboratory, then its better to take guidance and follow the instructor. Working under supervision of someone superior reduces chances of risk 5. Know emergency procedures Its always good to Know where the nearest emergency eyewash and showers are, and how to use them. Know at least two exits from the laboratory area in case of an emergency. 6. Last but not the least, Report all accidents, no matter how minor. Never perform unauthorized work, preparations or experiments. Never engage in horseplay, pranks or other acts of mischief in laboratories.
