24. WANDERING ABOUT IN A MARKET Mrs Scott will never forget what happened to her yesterday. It was Saturday and she went to the local market. It was the sort of market where you can buy clothes and household things as well as fruit and vegetables. She took her little boy Andrew with her. She was looking for some cheap shirts for her husband. Her attention was attracted by some shirts which were on sale, but before buying them she went around lots of stalls comparing prices and was absorbed by what she was doing that she completely forgot about Andrew. It would have been better if she had kept an eye on him since Andrew had wondered off on his own until his attention too was attracted by something, or rather by somebody. There an old man was going round the market with a monkey on his shoulder and carrying a box full of odd things for sale. Andrew followed the old man and his monkey who was bound to play tricks sooner or later. He was sure about this because he had seen another monkey doing this sort of things some time before in the same market. Suddenly Mrs Scott realized that Andrew had gone. She looked behind the stalls and even called out his name. what on earth had made him run off on his own? There was no answer. She felt at a loss. What could she do? After ten minutes she was in a terrible panic. Eventually she saw a policeman in the distance. She approached and asked him for help. The policeman wanted to know some details about the boy: what he was wearing and what he looked like. Andrew was nowhere to be seen and even the policeman seemed rather worried. All of a sudden, the policeman’s face beamed. He had contacted his police station by radio and the news was good. Andrew was there. He had been found by another policeman. Mrs Scott went straight to the police station with the policeman and was very relieved to find Andrew there. He was a little bit frightened and ashamed of himself, but otherwise alright. His mother must have asked him at least twenty times, “Where have you been?” 1- Reproduce the story from the point of view of Mrs Scott 2- Build up a dialogue from this story. 3- A friend told me that… 4- Who said the following and why? a) ‘Where have you been?’ 5- Complete the following short passages with the help of the key words and phrases provided.
