23. AT THE AIRPORT When Roy got to the airport, he found out that the plane from New York, on which his brother was travelling, had been delayed at Paris, with engine trouble and was expected to be an hour late. He didn’t mind this because he could pass the time happily, watching the planes land and take off. He had a slight headache and he thought that the noise of engines would make it worse. He went back to the place where he had left his car to make sure that all the doors were locked. Besides, he had forgotten his mobile inside the car. The walk in the fresh air did him good. He felt better as he entered the airport building again. He went to the restaurant and ordered a cup of strong black coffee. When he had finished his coffee, he went along to the bookstall, where he bought a couple of magazines, both of them about travel, which would help to make the time pass pleasantly. However, he couldn’t find anything interesting so he gave up reading and started examining the people over the pages of his magazine: some passengers were anxious about the time, and kept on looking at their watches; others checked to see that they had tickets, passports and money; there was a fat woman right opposite him who was trying to quieten her boy. The boy kept asking questions about this and that, and she told him that little boys were non supposed to know everything; a middle-aged man, next to her, had fallen asleep and was snoring rather loudly. His son, who was right beside him, gave him a gentle push whenever his snoring became too disturbing; two young men were talking in high spirits. They spoke a foreign language that Roy couldn’t understand, but from their gestures he could see they were telling jokes, for they both burst into laughter and then one of them started another story while the other one listened attentively; there was one woman who burst into tears as she said goodbye to the relatives or friends who had come to see her off. Roy found it quite interesting to watch those people around him until someone came up and put his hand on Roy’s shoulder. It was an old friend, who was just about to leave on a business trip to South America. Since they had not seen each other for a long time, they found plenty to talk about until the arrival of Roy’s brother plane from Paris was announced. 1- Reproduce the story from the point of view of: Roy 2- Build up a dialogue from this story. 3- A friend told me that… 4- Complete the following short passages with the help of the key words and phrases provided.
