19. MODERN TRAFFIC Last winter Clare Milton went to New York on business. Her husband went with her. At the end of the week, they packed their bags and checked out of the hotel in the morning. Clare’s husband went sightseeing while she was at another business meeting. They agreed to meet at the airport that evening. They had to be there by eight o’clock at the latest. The meeting went on and on! Clare stayed until six. Then she had to apologise and leave. When she got down to the street, there was heavy snow everywhere. She caught a taxi, but it was just before Christmas and there was a terrible traffic jam. She looked at her watch again and again. She was very worried. She didn’t want to miss the plane. Then the taxi broke down. She remembered there was a subway service to the airport. She ran to the nearest station. It was almost seven when she got there. She had to go to another station and change trains once. That took more than an hour. Then she had to wait another ten minutes before the right train arrived. It took another hour to the get to the station near the airport, where she had to change again. But this time she took a bus the rest of the way. It was almost eight thirty. It wasn’t far to the airport but the snow was heavier and so was the traffic. Much heavier. When finally, she got to the airport, it was nearly nine. She hurried off the bus with all her luggage and ran towards the check-in desk. Then she fell and almost broke her ankle. There was a big crowd of people around the check-in desk. One of them was her husband. He helped her to get up. “There was no need to hurry,” he said, “this snow has delayed everything. The plane’s late too.” 1- Reproduce the story from the point of view of Clare 2- Build up a dialogue from the story. 3- Who said the following and why? a- ‘There was no need to hurry.’ 4- A friend told me that… 5- Join the following group of sentences. You can add or omit words, of course, and make any other small changes necessary, but you should not alter the sense. Mrs Patton had twin girls. One was called Eve. She was born on Xmas Eve.
