17. BURGLARY Mr and Mrs Woods were at home last week and just about to have tea. The radio was playing and Mrs Woods was reading his paper when the telephone rang. Mrs Woods answered it. It was Mrs Hill who lived a few streets away. She wanted to know if they were free that evening and would like to come around for drinks after dinner. Mrs Woods was very happy to accept the invitation and went to tell her husband. After dinner, Mrs and Mrs Woods made the short journey to their neighbours’ house It was only two or three minutes’walk away. They sat and chatted over drinks with the Hills most of the evening. They always get on well, so the time passed quickly and pleasantly. It was nearly eleven o’clock when they got up to leave. It had been a nice evening but, before long, the Woods wished they had stayed at home! The front door was wide open and they could see immediately that they had been burgled. The whole place had been turned upside down. The thief or the thieves had stolen all their money and even the necklace Mr Woods had given his wife for her birthday had gone. They phoned the police and an officer came round within minutes. He took down the details and was full of sympathy. He also wrote on a pad a list of all the things had been robbed. Unfortunately, he said, this sort of things was happening more and more these days. This was no great consolation to Mr and Mrs Woods who were up half the night clearing up the mess the thieves had left behind, 1- Reproduce the story from the point of view of: Mrs Woods or Mr Woods b- the police officer 4- Build up a dialogue from the story. 5- A friend told me that… 2- Write the following passage out again, adding, in the spaces indicated by numbers, one word or phrase from each of the lists with the corresponding numbers given below each passage: After (1) the table for supper, he (2) down on the sofa and (3) reading the newspaper.
