19. Malcom Bridge was still in his office when the telephone rang. A voice from the other end said, “If you aren’t here soon, there will be a murder.” “I’m coming right away” was Malcom’s answer. He got his coat and hat in a hurry and got to the address he had been given in less than twenty minutes. He drove through back streets to avoid the traffic in the centre of the town. He got there. It was an old building in one of the poorest neighbourhoods. There was no light at the entrance and he had to find his way up with the help of his mobile. He had reached the second floor when he heard a shot. He made out a door opposite the stairs. Another shot rang out and evidently it came from that apartment. He threw himself at the door and stumbled over the body of a woman. Without stopping, he went into the next room. A man, clutching a revolver in his right hand, lay bleeding on a long bed.
