8. Last Saturday was Mom’s birthday. She invited all her friends. At first, she wanted to take them to the restaurant. You know, there’s a restaurant just round the corner. Then she changed her mind. She had attended a cooking course and she wanted to show her friends how good she was at cooking. On Friday afternoon she asked me, “Can you help me to cook?”. I couldn’t wait to help Mom. We spent all the afternoon make cakes and rolls. Mom bought a salmon at the market and cooked it. Mom was laying the table and I went into the kitchen to get spoons, forks and knives. And there I shouted and called Mum: “The cat is on the table. She’s eating the salmon!” Mom came into the kitchen and threw a shoe at the cat. “Oh, my God! What can I do now?” she kept on repeating. She was desperate. “Don’t worry!”, I said to her. I had an idea. I put slices of cucumber on the damage the cat had done. Her friends ate everything and congratulated Mom on the delicious meal she had prepared. After the meal, while the guests were chatting and drinking, Mom asked me, “Can you make some coffee, dear?” When I went into the kitchen I couldn’t believe my eyes. The cat was lying on the floor. She was dead. When Mom told her friends what had happened, they all rushed to the hospital.
