Are you ill or something?” Mrs Briggs shouted. “You were out late again last night. You don’t get a proper night’s sleep, that’s your trouble|:” “I was down at the club.” Jane answered sleepily “You’re always down there these days. Never forget the old saying, - The early bird gets the worm- “At the club we sit around and talk. Or have a coke and listen to music.” “Just look at this room. It’s in a complete mess again,” complained her mother. “Clothes and magazines all over the place.” Mrs Briggs, still grumbling to herself, started to tidy them up. Jane came back into the room, combing her hair and said, “Someone’s invited me to a party in London on Saturday night. Do you mind if I stay there overnight?” “First the club, now the parties… .” said Mrs Briggs scornfully: “Ask your father!” Anyway, who’s giving the party? The boy who rang last Sunday? The one with the funny voice?” “Funny voice!” muttered Jane to herself.
